Origin and history

The bridge over the Cadoule de Castries, located in the Hérault department in the Occitanie region, is a monument built during the 3rd quarter of the 18th century, probably between 1760 and 1770. This cutting stone bridge, characterized by a unique arch of 14.70 metres in range, is a remarkable example of civil engineering of its time. Its structure, surmounted by a full balustrade, has a pronounced donkey back, typical of ancient bridges designed to facilitate the flow of water and withstand flooding.

The key to the arch of the bridge carries the weapons of Monsignor of Durfort de l'Orge, a character who would have commissioned its construction. This heraldic detail suggests a strong link between the work and the local aristocracy of the time. The construction techniques employed, such as the load pile device of the harpsichords near the base and the key, reflect precise artisanal know-how and a mastery of materials, especially the cutting stone.

Ranked Historic Monument by decree of 12 October 1946, the bridge over the Cadoule bears witness to the importance of road and river infrastructures in the territorial and economic organization of Languedoc in the 18th century. Its designation as historic monuments highlights its architectural and historical heritage value and makes it a key part of Castries' heritage and its region.
