Origin and history

The ancient bridge of Tarascon, dated the 12th century, is a medieval building located in the Bouches-du-Rhône department, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. This monument, whose location is estimated to be "a priori satisfactory", is located near the crossing of departmental roads 42 and 36, in the Saint-Gabriel district. It was entered in the inventory of Historic Monuments by order of 7 April 1939, thus recognizing its heritage value.

The construction of this bridge dates back to the 12th century, a period marked in Provence by the development of trade and religious exchanges. Medieval bridges then played a key role in communication networks, facilitating travel between towns and villages. Although the available sources (Monumentum, Merimée base) do not specify its exact use or any subsequent modifications, its inscription in 1939 confirms its historical and architectural importance for the town of Tarascon, now owner of the monument.

The current data do not mention the architect or the precise circumstances of his construction. However, its presence in the landscape reflects medieval civil engineering techniques, adapted to local needs. The bridge, still visible today, offers a material testimony of regional history, although its current state or accessibility is not detailed in the sources consulted.
