Puits, in the courtyard of the house (Box E 236): inscription by order of 19 December 1946
Origin and history
Narbonne's well, classified as a Historical Monument, is located at the corner of the Quai de la Charité and the old rue des Carmes (current Voltaire Street). It is part of a 17th century real estate complex, originally consisting of a large house with inner courtyard. When the hospital of Charity was built around 1685, this building was preserved despite the planned extension of the hospital. The house was later divided into two parts, with separate entrances on the wharf and the street, while the facades were remodelled.
The well, the only surviving element almost intact, is backed by a wall of the courtyard. Its structure features a cul-de-four niche, adorned with a flat band and shell, characteristic of 17th-century architecture. The margin, typical of the works of this time, retains its original swell. This well is already on Narbonne's plans in the 18th century, confirming its seniority and importance in the urban fabric of the time.
The monument was protected by an inscription order on 19 December 1946, specifically covering the well in the courtyard of the house (cadastre E 236). Its official address is the 1 quai de la Charité, although GPS coordinates locate it approximately at 4 Quai Dillon. The accuracy of its location is estimated to be poor (note 5/10), reflecting uncertainties about its exact location in a transformed urban context.
