Origin and history

Herny's well is a monument dating from the Gallo-Roman period, located in the municipality of the same name in Moselle (Great East). This ancient vestige is distinguished by its margin, an architectural element protected by a ministerial decree of 9 December 1929. The inscription under the title of Historical Monuments concerns only this element, today owned by the municipality.

The location of the well, although documented (8 Rue de Seutry, Herny), is considered to be of poor accuracy (level 5/10 depending on the sources). This type of structure, typical of Gallo-Roman settlements, demonstrates the importance of water supply in the ancient habitats of the region. Public or private wells then played a central role in daily life, reflecting the construction and hydraulic techniques inherited from Rome.
