Origin and history

The Raymond Poincaré departmental museum is housed in the former residence of the politician, located in Sampigny (Meuse). This neo-Louis XIII castle, built of bricks and stones of Savonnières according to the plans of the architect of the Netherlands Charles-Désiré Bourgon, was bequeathed to the Department of the Meuse in 1943 by Madame Poincaré, in accordance with the wishes of the President. The initial objective was to establish an orphanage for the wards of the department, a function which it will perform until 1981, when the evolution of social policies led to its closure.

Transformed into a museum in 1986, the site now houses an important collection of archives, souvenirs and works evoking the career of Raymond Poincaré, a lawyer, a man of letters and a major figure in the Third Republic. The collections, enriched by bequests, acquisitions and donations, cover various themes: local history, military history, biography, as well as drawings and prints. The estate, with terraced gardens, offers a remarkable heritage setting to discover the heritage of this historic character.

The museum benefits from the label Musée de France and is distinguished by its characteristic architecture, combining classical and regional influences. His interest lies as much in the richness of his collections as in his role as a living memory of the political and social history of Lorraine and France.
