Castral motte (C 71-74, 77-82): entry by order of 1 February 1993
Origin and history
The castral motte of Razès is a historic monument located in the commune of Razès, Haute-Vienne, in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. This type of fortified structure, typical of the Middle Ages, generally served as a point of defence and territorial control. Although the precise details of its construction and use remain unclear in the available sources, its registration as a Historic Monument in 1993 demonstrates its heritage importance.
Castral mots were often associated with feudal systems, where they played a central role in local organization. They served as a refuge for the surrounding populations in the event of conflict and symbolized the power of local lords. In the Limousin region to which Razès belongs, these structures were common because of its turbulent history and its strategic position between different territories.
