Origin and history
The dread of Kamietako-Borda, also called the dread of Harismendi, is a historic monument located in Saint-Pée-sur-Nivelle, in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques. Built in the first quarter of the 19th century, it illustrates the military architecture of this period, marked by tensions between France and its European neighbours.
The dread was associated with the defence of the French-Spanish border by Marshal Soult in 1813, in the context of the Napoleonic wars. It was part of a system of fortifications designed to counter the advances of the British army, then engaged in the Iberian peninsula. This monument, now owned by the commune, was entered in the inventory of Historical Monuments by order of 12 August 1992.
The location of the dread, although documented, remains approximate according to available sources, with an accuracy assessed as "a priori satisfactory". Its historical role, linked to a specific episode of Napoleonic conflicts, makes it a tangible testimony to the military strategies of the time. The dread is identified under cadastre C 586, and its current state or conditions of visit are not specified in the sources consulted.
