Origin and history

The suspension bridge of Remoulins, located in the municipality of the same name in Occitanie region, is now known mainly by its remains. From the original work, only the abutments consisting of two Doric-style columns remain, as well as the guard houses located on each bank. These elements, though fragmentary, bear witness to the architecture and construction techniques used at the time of its creation.

Ranked as historical monuments by order of 30 December 1939, the suspension bridge of Remoulins is a property shared between the municipality and the State. The protected elements specifically include the remains of the old bridge, abutments, doric columns and two neighbouring buildings. These remains, though partial, provide an overview of the historical and architectural significance of this work in the local landscape.

The location of the monument, close to the famous Pont du Gard, suggests a historical context linked to the communication routes and crossings of the Gardon.
