Origin and history

The Roman ramparts of Autun, located in the ancient city of Augustodunum (now Autun in Saône-et-Loire), date from the Roman period. Their construction is part of the urban development of this city founded under Emperor Augustus, although the source text does not specify an exact date. These fortifications, among the best preserved in Gaul, illustrate the strategic and symbolic importance of the city in the Roman territorial organization.

The monument was the subject of numerous legal protections in the 20th century. Several sections of the ramparts were inscribed by order of 9 May 1927, covering various parcels (cadastrees B, C, D). Other parties were classified by order of September 16, 1937, and an additional section was classified on November 30, 1937, reflecting their exceptional heritage value. These protections concern portions belonging to various owners: commune, state, private or associations.

The location of the ramparts, although documented (notably via the approximate address 1 Rue Georges Leyton), is considered "passable" (note 5/10) according to the Merimée base. Their current status and accessibility to the public (visits, usage) are not detailed in available sources. Their presence, however, bears witness to the Roman heritage in Burgundy, an area marked by a dense ancient occupation.

The ramparts extend over multiple plots, some forming the southeast boundary of the Autun Pre-Trial Military School. This complex distribution, between public and private spaces, highlights the challenges of preserving a monument that is both integrated into the urban and fragmented fabric. No information is provided on any historical characters related to their construction or restoration.
