Origin and history

The Renaissance Cross of Saint-Martin-lès-Langres is a historic monument located at the northern entrance of the village. Dating from the 15th century, it embodies the religious and funeral architecture typical of this period, marked by artistic and cultural renewal in Europe. This type of cross, often erected near villages or along roads, served as a spiritual landmark and symbolized divine protection for travelers and local inhabitants.

In the 15th century, the Champagne-Ardenne region, now integrated into the Grand East, was mainly rural and organized around agriculture, crafts and trade. The monumental crosses, like that of Saint Martin-les-Langres, played an important social and religious role. They marked the boundaries of parishes, served as a gathering place for processions, and recalled the presence of Christian faith in the daily lives of communities.

Their preservation to date reflects their heritage value and their attachment to local history.
