Origin and history

Grézillac's 17th century restroom has been a religious building with historical monuments since 1925. Located on the church square, it is distinguished by its four canned columns at half height, surmounted by Corinthian capitals. These columns support a stone baldaquin decorated with volutes and roses, characteristic of the emerging baroque style. At a later time, probably in the 19th century, a wrought iron cross and a statue of the Virgin were added, slightly changing its original appearance.

Grézillac, a rural commune of Gironde in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, is part of a territory marked by a strong wine and agricultural tradition, particularly in the Entre-deux-Mers. This repose, typical of the outside liturgical arrangements, probably served during religious processes, especially those of the Feast of God. These buildings, often erected in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, reflected the popular piety and central role of the Church in community life.

The monument is part of a rich local heritage, including a partially Romanesque church and Gallo-Roman remains discovered in 1976. Its inscription in 1925 bears witness to its architectural and historical value, although its precise location (place de l'Église or 10 Le Bourg) is the subject of slightly contradictory sources. The municipality, exposed to flood risks linked to the Dordogne, retains this heritage despite the recurring natural hazards.
