Origin and history

The residence of the Abbés of Echternach in Berg-sur-Moselle is a historical monument dating back to a donation made in 915 by the Earl of Reginar, Abbé of Echternach, who offered the lands of Berg and Rodemack to the Abbey. Today, there are three main buildings: a dovecote probably from the seventeenth century, a residence with partially preserved interiors (woodworks, kitchen, parquet floors, wrought iron staircase), and a farm. These elements illustrate the civil architecture commissioned by the Abbés of Echternach, typical of the 18th century Lorraine country houses, with peculiarities such as a large arcade dividing the kitchen or a structure called "German".

The residence, supplemented by a dovecote and a 19th century farm body, reflects the influence of the abbots in the region. Its architecture combines functional elements (heating plate, arrangement of rooms) and aesthetics, characteristics of secular constructions of the time. The whole, including floors, fence walls, garden, facades and interiors of the house, was inscribed in the Historical Monuments by decree of 17 February 2003, emphasizing its heritage importance.

The site, located at the address 1 place des Tilleuls in Berg-sur-Moselle (Moselle, Grand Est), enjoys a location deemed satisfactory. Although the information on its current accessibility (visits, rentals, accommodation) is not specified in the sources, its state of conservation and its protected elements make it a remarkable testimony of the Lorrain history linked to the Abbés of Echternach.
