Origin and history

The chalet Bourda, now called a prefectural residence, is a house on stilts located in Cayenne, Guyana. This iconic building was originally conceived as a large secondary residence, reflecting the local architecture adapted to tropical climate. Its construction in 1874 marked a period when Guyana, then French colony, was administered by governors residing in buildings symbolizing their authority.

The residence was used by the governors of Guyana until 1947, the year of the département of the territory. From then on, it became the official residence of the prefects, thus embodying the continuity of the local administrative power. The site includes several remarkable features, including the main house, a "Ministers' Pavilion", a monumental staircase, and a paved access to the sea, reflecting its historical and functional importance.

Classified as historical monuments by order of 24 December 2013, the residence is fully protected, with the exception of modern amenities such as the swimming pool and the carbet. This classification underscores its heritage value, linked to its political role and characteristic architecture. The property now belongs to the department of Guyana, perpetuating its institutional use.

The Bourda chalet illustrates the administrative evolution of Guyana, from the status of colony to that of French department. Its history is closely linked to that of Jean-Louis Loubère, governor of the time, who ordered its construction. This monument remains a symbol of the colonial heritage and the transition to modern departmental governance.
