Amphitheatre (rests of one): by order of 20 March 1936
Origin and history
The remains of an amphitheater located in Chassenon, in the department of Charente (New Aquitaine), are a historical monument classified since 20 March 1936. This vestige, although partially preserved, illustrates the importance of Roman constructions in this region, formerly integrated into the Roman province of Gaul Aquitaine. The building, now protected, offers an overview of public architecture and cultural practices of the Gallo-Roman era, including the performances and gatherings that took place there.
In Roman times, the amphitheatres played a central role in the social and political life of the cities. They served as a place of entertainment (slide fighting, hunting, theatres) but also as a symbol of imperial power and the romanization of conquered territories. In a region like the Poitou-Charentes, marked by a dense Roman occupation, these monuments reflected the integration of local populations into Roman cultural uses.
They often met strategic criteria, such as proximity to communication channels or urban centres.
