Origin and history
The building housing the restaurant Le Mercure galant was built between 1638 and 1641 as a report building, then overlooking the gardens of the Cardinal Palace (before the construction of Victor Louis' galleries in 1781). Its façade was redesigned during the first half of the 18th century, reflecting the architectural changes of the period.
In the 19th century, the building underwent major changes, including the creation of a ballroom between 1850 and 1860, now integrated into the restaurant. These developments, combined with interior and exterior changes (such as the façade on the rue des Petits-Champs), testify to its adaptation to the social and cultural uses of the period.
Ranked Historic Monument by order of 18 March 1996, the site specifically protects the facade and roof on the rue de Beaujolais, as well as the former ballroom on the first floor. This recognition underscores the heritage value of a place mixing aristocratic heritage of the seventeenth century and bourgeois fascists of the nineteenth century.
