Origin and history

The Prunier restaurant, located at 16 avenue Victor-Hugo in the 16th arrondissement of Paris, was designed in 1925 as a "tasting bar" specialized in seafood products. Its architecture and decor, typical of the Art Deco style, were designed by the architect Louis-Hippolyte Boileau in collaboration with the cartoonist Léon Carrière. The interior elements, such as the glass engravings of Paul Binet and the gold metal panels of the sculptor Le Bourgeois, reinforce the marine atmosphere, while the mosaic façade, a work by Auguste Labouret, evokes volutes and colours inspired by the ocean. The glass paste floors, laid by Briard, complement this coherent artistic ensemble.

The building, classified as a Historical Monument by decree of 11 July 1989, was rehabilitated in 1993 under the direction of architect Yves Boucharlat. Originally, the venue embodied an innovative approach to catering, combining gastronomy and avant-garde design, characteristic of the 1920s in Paris. Today, the Prunier restaurant remains a remarkable testimony of the art of living and the creative audacity of this period, while being a private property still active.

The location of the monument, at the corner of Victor-Hugo Avenue and Traktir Street, makes it a point of interest in a residential and bourgeois district of Paris. Its inscription in the inventory of Historic Monuments highlights the heritage value of its architecture and decorations, where artisanal know-how and artistic vision intersect. The contributions of the various artists and artisans, each expert in his field, illustrate the interdisciplinary collaboration typical of the major Art Deco projects.
