Origin and history
The Sainte-Anne Calvary, also known as the Cross of Prisoners, is a monumental cross located in Séneujols, Haute-Loire, on the road between Bains and Séneujols. This monument consists of two distinct parts: a 17th-century carved pyramidal block, topped by a lily-flowered iron cross, and a modern granitic cross added in memory of the French prisoners of the Second World War (1940-1944). The chains symbolizing captivity connect these elements, creating a dialogue between times.
The ancient block, heavily eroded, carries enigmatic sculptures: a veiled woman holding an indefinite being (man or animal), a bearded character evoking Christ, Moses or a biblical figure, and a partial inscription "FAICTPARMEANDRE", possibly assigning the work to a sculptor named Meandre or Andrew. An illegible date, beginning with "16...", confirms its origin at the end of the 17th century. These details, although degraded, bear witness to a local craftsmanship and a marked religious symbolism.
The modern cross, added later, bears the " 1940" and " 1944" vintages, as well as chains, explicitly commemorating French prisoners of war. This dual heritage — religious and memorial — makes this monument a hybrid object, both vestige of the auvergnat rural heritage and symbol of the Resistance. The local tradition calls it "very ancient", although its inscription in the Historical Monuments (11 June 1930) concerns only the "remnants of the cross" of origin.
The location, on the road axis between Bains and Séneujols, suggests an initial function of landmark or protection for travellers, typical of the cross-roads in Velay. Today the communal property, the site remains accessible, although its exact location (1 Impasse des Pageniers) is approximate according to the sources. The descriptions differ on its state: Monumentum evokes a "rudiment of flower" and "unreadable letters", while Wikipedia highlights the degradation of sculptures, reflecting conservation challenges.
The sources agree on its classification as historical monuments since 1930, but none of them specify the circumstances of its protection. The work of Jean Chaize (Croix du Velay and Haute-Loire, 1981) could provide additional clarification, although not detailed here. Finally, the mention "Portail de l'architecture christienne" in the external links recalls its anchoring in the tradition of the cross-roads, omnipresent in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes.
