Origin and history
The Assumption of Beaulieu-en-Argonne is a historic monument located in the enclosure of the Hermitage of Saint-Rouin, at Beaulieu-en-Argonne (Meuse, Grand Est). Dated from the seventeenth century, it was classified by ministerial decree on 19 June 1972. This retable is now the property of a cult association, which suggests its continued or restored religious use.
The location of the altarpiece, in a hermitage, indicates its connection to an isolated or contemplative spiritual tradition, typical of the rural areas of Lorraine. The hermitage of Saint Rouin, although little documented in the source text, seems to be a place of Marian devotion, as suggested by the theme of the Assumption. The accuracy of its location is considered "passable" (note 5/10), which may reflect approximate coordinates or a site that is difficult to access.
The 1972 classification emphasizes the heritage value of the altarpiece, probably for its artistic or historical qualities. The 17th century retables in Lorraine were often commissioned by religious communities or local donors, in a context of Catholic Counter-Reform. However, no name of sponsor, artist or event specific to this retable is mentioned in the available sources.
The Greater East region, and especially the Meuse, was in the 17th century an area of passage and conflict, marked by the Thirty Years' War (1618-1648). The retables of that time could be used to affirm the Catholic presence in sometimes disputed territories. This monument is therefore part of a religious, artistic and geopolitical context, although local details are lacking to clarify its exact role.
Today, the altarpiece remains associated with the hermitage of Saint-Rouin, but information on its accessibility (visits, cult) or state of conservation is not specified.
