Origin and history

The Cailar arenas, located in the Gard department in the Occitan region, were built in 1905 to replace the old Cancel square, used for local Taurine games. Located in the south of the old village, on the site of an old cooler and an area to beat, they testify to the anchoring of the traditions of the sheep in Lower Languedoc. Their construction reflects the cultural importance of Camargua races and novillidas in community life.

Since 18 January 1993, these arenas have been listed as historic monuments, with a capacity of more than 1,100 seats and their configuration adapted to young bulls, according to analyses by the ethnologist Frédéric Saumade. Their morphology influences local Tauromachi practices, integrating empirical knowledge on the interactions between shavers, beasts and playspace. Together, including toril, buvette and presidency, is protected for its role in ethnological and architectural heritage.

Owned by the municipality of Cailar, the arenas have been regularly maintained since their commissioning. Their inscription covers not only the building (walls, barriers, equipment) but also landscape elements such as a plane plantation. This monument illustrates the sustainability of Tauromachic cultures in the Camargue, between rural heritage and contemporary practices.
