Origin and history

The Restaurant du Journal, located in the 2nd arrondissement of Paris, is a historical monument whose construction spans between the last quarter of the 19th century and the first quarter of the 20th century. It is distinguished by its architecture and interior decoration, notably the Cariatides Hall, which led to its ranking in 1981. The establishment is representative of the Parisian sociability of the Belle Époque, where journalism, politics and social life were mixed.

The building, located at 98-102 rue de Richelieu and 20-22 rue Saint-Marc, was designed by several masterpieces, including Cabié, Poulbot, Rosen, Truchet and Vauthier. These artisans have helped shape a unique place, combining art and functionality. The decor of the main hall, as well as the remains of the Cariatides Hall, have been protected since 1981, highlighting their exceptional heritage value. Today, the restaurant belongs to a private company, perpetuating its legacy while adapting to contemporary uses.

The location of the Journal Restaurant, in the heart of a historical and cultural district of Paris, makes it a privileged witness to the urban and social transformations of the capital. Its classification as Historic Monument reflects the importance attached to the preservation of emblematic places of Parisian life, where architecture, art and history intersect. The accuracy of its location, noted as fair, and the photographs available under Creative Commons license, such as Rémi Mathis, help document and value this heritage.
