Origin and history

The road cross of Colombier is a historical monument located in the village of Colombier, in the department of Allier (region Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes). Originally, she was on the road to Commentry, before being transferred in 1986 to the nave of the parish church. This move was probably aimed at preserving it, while maintaining its link with the local community.

The cross is in the form of a stone needle with four carved faces, placed on a base adorned with a bas-relief. The latter represents a kneeling character, probably the donor, accompanied by an angel in the background. These artistic elements suggest a function both religious and commemorative, typical of the road crosses of modern times.

Classified as historical monuments by order of 5 February 1929, this cross illustrates the bourbon heritage of the 16th century. The sources available, including a study by G. Grassoreille published in 1888 in the Annales Bourbonnaises, underline its local importance. Its style and iconography reflect the devoted and artistic practices of the Renaissance in this region.

The periods of construction mentioned vary according to the sources: the 2nd quarter of the 16th century according to some, the 3rd quarter according to others. This discrepancy could be explained by separate work campaigns or different interpretations of stylistic elements. The cross remains today the property of the municipality of Colombier.

Initially set up along a road axis, this cross of paths probably served as a spiritual landmark for travellers and residents. Its movement into the church in the 20th century marked an evolution in its perception, from a utilitarian and public object to a protected heritage element. This change also reflects the transformations of landscapes and religious practices in Bourbonnais.
