The rock called Garreta engraved rock and the basement of Parcel B 503 (Box B 503): classification by order of 14 December 2016
Origin and history
The engraved Garreta d'Enveitg rock, classified as a Historic Monument in 2016, is distinguished by its 29 panels with 860 engraved signs according to the so-called "naviforme" technique. These engravings, in the shape of V or evoking hulls of ships, are made by incusing the rock from top to bottom. This site is an exceptional testimony of protohistoric rock art, offering a unique insight into the artistic and symbolic practices of this time in Cerdagne.
This monument constitutes a scientific unicum, having allowed for the first time to attest a protohistoric dating (Iberian period) of naviform engravings. Research on this rock showed that these representations were not random, but meaningful, contributing to a better understanding of the region's ancient cultures. His study based the scientific discourse on local rock engravings, especially for the Iberian period.
Located in Enveitg in the Pyrénées-Orientales, the rock and its basement were protected by a classification order in 2016, highlighting its heritage importance. Although its precise location is considered "passable" (note of 5/10), it remains a key site for archaeologists and historians interested in Protohistory in Occitania. The engravings, by their number and technique, offer a rare overview of the cultural expressions of the protohistoric societies of this border area between France and Spain.
