Roman Egout: by order of 5 October 1960

Origin and history

The Roman sewer of Lyon is an architectural vestige located in the 5th arrondissement of the city, dating from the ancient period. This monument illustrates the wastewater management techniques developed by the Romans at Lugdunum, then the capital of Gauls. Its route follows partly the current Roger-Radisson street and the Place de Fourvière, central areas of ancient Lyon.

Ranked a historic monument by order of October 5, 1960, this sewer is subject to heritage protection because of its archaeological importance. The property of the site is shared between the municipality of Lyon and a private company, although its precise location remains subject to uncertainties (level of accuracy estimated at 5/10 depending on the sources). The data available is mainly from the Merimée database and the Monumentum platform.

The monument is part of a dense urban context, where water management was crucial for a city like Lugdunum, with up to 50,000 inhabitants at its peak. The Roman sewers, often vaulted and built of stone, were used not only for sanitation but also for drainage of stormwater, reflecting an advanced social and technical organization for the time. Their presence attests to the planned urbanization characteristic of Roman cities in Gaul.

No information is available on current public access to this site or on recent archaeological excavations. The approximate GPS coordinates place the monument near Place de Fourvière, the historic heart of Lyon, but their accuracy remains limited. The Creative Commons license associated with the photos of the site (credit: BELZUNCE Christian) suggests accessible visual documentation, although not detailed in the sources.
