Origin and history
The Romanesque house located at 25 rue de la République in Cluny is a monument classified among the French Historical Monuments. This building is distinguished by its facade, the only element protected by a classification order dated 23 May 1912. The building is representative of medieval civil architecture, although its precise location, assessed as "passible" (note 5/10), may allow some uncertainty about its exact location in the available sources.
Cluny, the emblematic city of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, is known for its rich heritage linked to the Clunisian monastic order, founded in the 10th century. Romanesque houses, like this one, illustrate medieval urban life, often organized around abbeys and craft or commercial activities. These houses, built of stone, reflect a period when civil architecture began to structure itself, in parallel with the large religious buildings that dominated the urban landscape.
Their preservation offers a material testimony of the lifestyles and construction techniques of the time.
