Origin and history
The Romanesque house on Rue des Lanciers in Brignoles is an example of medieval civil architecture in the Var. Classified as a Historical Monument, it is distinguished by its façade, the only part protected by a decree of 1921. This building illustrates the Provencal vernacular heritage, typical of the cities of the region at that time.
In the south-east of France in the Middle Ages, stone houses such as this were used as both a dwelling and a place of commerce for local artisans or merchants. Brignoles, then administrative and economic center of the Comtat de Provence, saw coexist agricultural, artisanal activities and a network of narrow streets lined with stone constructions. These buildings reflected the region's relative prosperity, marked by exchanges between Provencal cities and Mediterranean ports.
