Origin and history

The Roman walls and fortifications of Feurs are a historical monument located in the commune of Feurs, in the Loire department (42), in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. This site combines remains of two distinct periods: the Gallo-Roman period and the 15th century. These architectural elements reflect the evolution of fortification techniques and the strategic importance of Feurs throughout the centuries.

The monument has been partially protected since 23 February 1925, when the 15th century Roman walls and fortifications, located in the old garden of the cure, were inscribed by decree. Today, these remains are distributed between the communal property and private owners. Their location, although documented, remains approximate, with an accuracy assessed as fair (5/10).

Feurs, known as the ancient Forum Segusiavorum, was an important crossroads during the Gallo-Roman period, playing a central role in trade and regional administration. The medieval fortifications, added much later, reflect the defensive needs of the city in the face of the conflicts of the 15th century, especially during the Hundred Years War or local tensions. These structures thus illustrate the superposition of military periods and uses in the urban planning of Feurs.

Practical information on access to the public is not specified in available sources. The monument, although referenced in the Merimée base and on Monumentum, does not have up-to-date details on the modalities of the visit, whether it be public openings, rentals or other services. Its approximate address, 3 Place de la Boaterie, allows however to situate it in the historic center of the city.
