Origin and history

The Roman route from Autun to Orléans crosses the territory of Ouroux-en-Morvan, in the present Burgundy-Franche-Comté. This section is part of an ancient road network designed to connect the main agglomerations of the Roman Gaul, facilitating military, commercial and administrative exchanges. Roads of this type were generally constructed using sustainable techniques, with stone foundations and a stabilized coating, allowing for prolonged use despite the weather.

Roman roads played a central role in the organisation of conquered territories, structuring rural and urban areas. In the vicinity of these roads, villages or villas (agricultural estates) often developed, benefiting from the movement of goods and people. In Morvan, a region with marked relief, these infrastructures also demonstrated Roman mastery in civil engineering, adapting the routes to local geographical constraints.
