Origin and history
The ruins of the chapel of Villemartin, located in Mouliets-et-Villemartin, date from the thirteenth century. This small rectangular flat bedside building was divided into three spans: the first two formed the nave, while the third, more decorated, housed the sanctuary. The edges of the vault rested on columns supported by carved heads, and the entrance was made by a south door adorned with a polylobed archvolt falling on two engaged columns.
This chapel belonged to the Commandery of the Templars of Villemartin, a powerful military and religious order in the Middle Ages. Its modest but neat architecture reflects the importance of the commandaries in the territorial and spiritual organization of the period, serving both as a place of worship and as a support point for Templar activities.
Classified as a Historical Monument by decree of 6 November 1920, the chapel is now owned by the municipality. Its state of ruins and its approximate location (noted 6/10 in precision) make it a fragile but emblematic vestige of the Templar heritage in Gironde. No information is available on its current accessibility or contemporary uses.
