13th century barn: inscription by decree of 3 April 1926
Origin and history
The ruins of the barn at the tithes of Cires-lès-Mello constitute a 13th century medieval monument. Located in the municipality of Cires-lès-Mello, in the department of Oise (60), this building is a typical example of tithe barns, used to collect tithes, taxes in kind collected by the church or local lords. These structures played a central economic role in rural communities, serving as a place of storage and redistribution of crops.
The barn at the tithes of Cires-lès-Mello was listed as a Historical Monument by order of April 3, 1926, recognizing its heritage value. Although partly in ruins, it bears witness to the utilitarian architecture of the Middle Ages and feudal organization of the region. tithe barns were often associated with abbeys or seigneuries, reflecting the economic and religious power of their owners. Their strategic location, close to cultivable land, facilitated tithe collection and strengthened control over peasant populations.
Today, the site is located at 2 Impasse de la Grange aux Dimes, in Cires-lès-Mello. Although the practical information about his visit or current use is limited, his inscription in the Merimée base and his GPS location attest to his historical importance. The accuracy of its location is assessed as 'a priori satisfactory', allowing researchers and visitors to locate it in the rural landscape of the Oise.
