Origin and history

The ruins of the chapel of Gueritus, located in Choue, are the remains of a Benedictine priory established around 1240. The monks, having left their initial priory in the enclosure of Mondoubleau Castle, settled near Choue. Today, only the chapel remains, marked by architectural elements typical of the 13th century, as a double archvolt door in third-point and oculi lobed.

The chapel had a simple but functional structure: a western gable pierced by an adorned door, a flanked bay d-oculi, and a side door leading to a small, perhaps the base of a bell tower. Inside, the walls were coated, suggesting a neat space. These details reveal a modest but characteristic construction of the monastic architecture of the era.

Classified as a Historical Monument by decree of 31 October 1912, the chapel of Guériteau illustrates the medieval religious heritage of the Centre-Val de Loire region. Its current state, though ruined, makes it possible to appreciate the techniques of construction and the spatial organization of Benedictine priories of the thirteenth century.
