Origin and history

The church Saint-Antoine de La Genétouze, located in the Charente-Maritime department, is a monument dating back to the 12th century, with major transformations in the 15th century. Originally dedicated to Notre-Dame, she was then placed under the name of Saint-Antoine. Its architecture preserves Romanesque elements such as the western gate, the choir and the bays of the nave, while the Gothic period brought it a vault on a d These characteristics illustrate the stylistic evolution between the two epochs, typical of the rural churches of the region.

The bell tower, whose structure seems to date from the seventeenth century, bears witness to subsequent repairs and adaptations. In 1929, urgent work was carried out by architect A. Gervy Lemoine to restore masonry, framework and cover. These interventions reflect local efforts to preserve a centuries-old religious heritage. The church, with its simple plan (one-of-a-kind nave, span under bell tower and cul-de-four choir), was inscribed in the historic monuments by decree of 5 December 2000, thus recognizing its heritage value.

Owned by the municipality of La Genétouze, the church is part of the religious and architectural landscape of New Aquitaine. Its inscription in the Mérimée base and its precise location (code Insee 17173) make it a key element of the Charente-Maritime heritage. Available sources, such as Monumentum and Wikipedia, highlight its historical importance, although some details, such as its current state of openness to the public, remain undocumented in the source texts.
