Church, excluding the bell tower arcade with its smoke duct (Box D 393): inscription by decree of 19 October 1972

Origin and history

The church of Saint-Arey de Serres, located in the commune of Serres (Hautes-Alpes), is a religious building dating back to the 11th and 12th centuries. It was significantly altered during the 2nd quarter of the 19th century. This monument, partially protected by an inscription order in 1972, excludes the bell tower and its smoke duct from this protection. Today it belongs to the municipality of Serres.

The location of the church is estimated with poor accuracy (level 5 out of 10), according to available data. Its official address, registered in the Mérimée database, corresponds to code INSEE 05166, attached to the Hautes-Alpes department and to the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. The building, typical of the medieval religious constructions of the region, reflects the architectural evolutions and liturgical needs of local communities throughout the centuries.

Available sources, including Monumentum and internal data, indicate that Saint Arey Church is an example of preserved religious heritage, although some parts, such as the bell tower arcade, do not enjoy the same protection. Its status as a historic monument underscores its cultural and architectural importance to the region. The structure, open or closed to the visit according to the periods, remains a point of interest for the study of local history and the evolution of religious practices in Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur.
