Origin and history
The church of Saint-Aubin de La Bohalle, located in the department of Maine-et-Loire, was built in the 1840s to replace an older building deemed too small. It rises on the banks of the Loire, behind a dike forming a square, but its unstable ground, composed of a embankment of slates, tuffeau and sand, quickly posed a problem. As early as 1850, major work was required: the choir and nave were lowered by 8 meters, while the side façades and the frame were strengthened.
The instability of the land has marked the history of the building since its construction. Despite these difficulties, the church survived and was recognized for its heritage value, obtaining an inscription as historical monuments on 29 October 1975. This status today protects an emblematic building from the technical and architectural challenges of the 19th century in Anjou.
The church is the work of a masterpiece named Villers, although little detailed information on its design or architectural style is available. Owned by the commune, it remains a testimony of the adaptations necessary to build on fragile soils, while serving as a place of worship and historic landmark for the local community. Its location, between Loire and old town, also makes it a key element of the Loire-Authion landscape.
