Church and soil of the adjoining cemetery (Box ZV 11): inscription by order of 23 August 1996
Origin and history
The church of Saint-Barthélemy de Tersac is a Catholic religious building located in the department of Lot-et-Garonne, in the commune of Meilhan-sur-Garonne. Although its construction was dated to the 12th century by some sources, its inscription to historical monuments in 1996 mentioned a 13th century building. This may reflect separate construction phases or subsequent changes. The church is distinguished by its Romanesque architecture, marked by a semicircular apse bedside narrower than the rectangular nave, as well as by a lateral chapel bordered to the north. An appentis porch protects the western entrance door, surmounted by a bell tower-wall pierced by two arches in the middle of the hangar, characteristic of the rural churches of the region.
The entrance door, Romanesque style, is decorated with historic capitals typical of this period. These decorative elements, combined with the sober structure of the building, illustrate Aquitaine Romanesque art, marked by both local and wider influence, linked to pilgrimage routes such as that of Santiago de Compostela. The church, surrounded by an adjacent cemetery, was listed as historic monuments by order of 23 August 1996, thereby recognizing its heritage value. Today it belongs to the municipality of Meilhan-sur-Garonne and remains an architectural and historical testimony of medieval religious life in New Aquitaine.
Located to the west of the communal territory, in the place called Tersac, the church is located near the departmental road D116 and the lateral canal to the Garonne. This position reflects its historic role as a gathering point for the local community, in a rural context where churches served as places of worship, sociability and collective organization. Historical capitals, although not detailed in the sources, suggest a desire to transmit religious or moral narratives to a predominantly illiterate population, typical of Romanesque artistic practices. The building, still visible today, offers a preserved example of rural religious architecture in southwestern France.
