Origin and history

The Saint-Barthélemy de Barry Church is a Catholic building located in the hamlet of Barry, Sauveterre-de-Cominges, Haute-Garonne. It was once the main church of the commune due to its proximity to the local medieval castle. Its tower tower, built in 1803, replaces an old bell tower, marking a notable architectural evolution. A historic cemetery surrounds the building, housing graves whose oldest, dated 1596, bears the carved IHS letters.

The interior of the church contains remarkable elements, such as the chapel of the Virgin Mary, with an altar and a marble tabernacle, as well as two paintings depicting the Sacred Heart and the Virgin with the Child. The choir, decorated with a master altar, a tabernacle and a wooden ciborium carved and painted like marble, was made around 1766 by Dominique Ferrère. These pieces, together with a 16th century statue of Pietà and a statue of a 14th century saint or bishop, are listed in the inventory of historical monuments.

Among the classified objects are a statue of the Virgin with the Child in polychrome wood, dating from the 14th to 15th centuries, transferred from the chapel Notre-Dame du Château de Barry. This statue, classified as historical monuments since 2016, is now preserved in the sacristy. The church thus illustrates both local religious history and artistic evolution throughout the centuries.
