Origin and history

The Saint-Cadoan church of Poullan-sur-Mer, located in the Finistère, has a composite architecture reflecting three centuries of construction. The interior piles and arcades, dated from the 14th century, evoke the primitive Gothic style, comparable to that of the Kerinec chapel. This first medieval state, although partially preserved, bears witness to an ancient phase of the building, before subsequent transformations.

The porch, erected during the first half of the 16th century, illustrates the influence of the Breton Renaissance, with sculptural elements characteristic of this period. The tower of the bell tower, begun in 1591 as indicated by the inscription HE LE BAIL FA LAN 1591 on the west door, marks a transition to the modern era. Work continued in the 17th century, with the addition of wings in 1702 (inscription I KERIVEL 1702), sacristy in 1729, and bedside in 1740. The bell tower, completed at the end of the seventeenth century, bears the inscription MRE Y. LE BIHAN CURE M.A.I CORRE HERVE KERIVEL FABRICQUE 1717, highlighting the role of the fascicians and the priest in its realization.

Inside, an ancient stele and a monumental cross of 1871, engraved in Breton (O CROAS SANTEL O CROAS BENNIGET), recall the sacred and community dimension of the place. Classified as a Historical Monument in 1932, the church embodies both a religious heritage and a local memory, where inscriptions and architectural elements tell about its evolution through the ages.
