Origin and history

The Saint-Clodoald church of Saint-Cloud, located in the Hauts-de-Seine, is a Catholic parish church dating back to the sixth century. A chapel would have existed as early as 550, linked to the arrival of Saint Clodoald. In the Middle Ages, it was a place of passage for relics, as during the procession of 1109 where ecclesiastical dignitaries, including Étienne de Garlande and the bishop of Paris Guibert, deposited a fragment of the True Cross there before his transfer to Notre-Dame de Paris.

The old church, rebuilt and modified several times between the 10th and 19th centuries, was entirely rebuilt between 1861 and 1863 by architect Pierre-Félix Delarue under the Second Empire. This project, financed mainly by Napoleon III, replaced an unfinished neoclassical building initiated by Marie-Antoinette in 1788 and completed in 1820. The current Romano-Gothic style dominates, with decorative elements signed by 19th-century artists such as Jules-Alexandre Duval Le Camus.

The church houses a stand organ designed by Aristide Cavaillé-Coll in 1854, later restored by Pascal Quetrin. The pulpit, made in 1899 by Ernest Guilbert, and the interior decorations, restored in 2021, bear witness to its rich artistic heritage. Ranked a historical monument in 1995, it embodies both the medieval heritage and the architectural transformations of the 19th century.
