Origin and history

Saint-Donat Church, built in Saint-Point (Saône-et-Loire) in the second half of the 11th century, is an emblematic example of Burgundy Romanesque architecture. Only its bell tower, more elaborate with its geminied bays and its committed columns, dates from the 12th century. This religious monument, marked by major works in 1765 (northern chapel financed by the Marquis de Saint-Point) and an enlargement in 1840 (partly supported by Lamartine), illustrates the evolution of architectural practices and local patronage over centuries.

The bedside of the church, composed of an apse and two semicircular apse covered with lauze, reflects the sobriety of the novel. The square bell tower, divided into two floors with contrasting decorations (baths walled on the first level, columns and lumbar bands on the second), culminates in a stone arrow pierced with skylights. These architectural elements, combined with remarkable furniture (sculpted master altar, Louis XV pulpit, statues and classified painting by Armand Leleux), testify to the artistic and spiritual richness of the place.

Ranked a historic monument in 1948 with the tomb of Alphonse de Lamartine, the church also preserves an adjoining cemetery housing 19th-century popular funeral sculptures, such as the tomb of the stone tailor J.B. Duport. This site, still communal property, links religious heritage, literary memory (via Lamartine) and local handicrafts, offering a multidisciplinary reading of Burgundy history.

The stained glass windows, including one signed by Lucien Bégule (master-glassman Lyonnais, 1848–1935), as well as liturgical objects (grill of communion, benigner) complete this decor. The presence of a Virgin and four saints painted by Leleux, protected in 2023, underscores the continuity of heritage protections. The ensemble forms a setting where faith, art and history blend together, anchored in the landscape of Burgundy-Franche-Comté.
