Origin and history

Saint-Étienne de Saint-Étienne-de-Vicq Church is a Catholic religious building located in the Allier department in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Built in the 11th and 12th centuries, it features a Romanesque architecture marked by a vaulted nave in a full hanger cradle, arched bottoms in quarter circle, and a semicircular apse. Its triumphal arch rests on two columns with carved capitals of characters and billeted taillons, typical elements of auvergnat Romanesque art.

One of the most remarkable features of this church is its circular bell tower, unique in the department, built on a square base probably dating from the twelfth century. Originally, the building served as a chapel at the local castle before being enlarged to meet the needs of the parish. Ranked a historic monument in 1932, the church illustrates the evolution of medieval religious spaces, from seigneurial use to community parish function.

The current structure, owned by the municipality, retains significant architectural elements such as the semicircular apse sanctuary and the vaults of the lower side. Although the sources mention an approximate location (5023 La Caissone), the church remains an important testimony of the bourbonese Romanesque heritage, integrated into the historical monuments of the Allier. Its history also reflects the local dynamics of power between lords and village communities in medieval times.
