Origin and history
The church of Saint-Étienne de Donnery, classified as a Historic Monument since 1925, presents an architectural plan marked by two vaulted spans of the thirteenth century. The latter are preceded by a nave covered with a wood frame with apparent entrances, dating from the 15th century and now capped above the beams. A double bow, supported by sculpted blazers representing a man's head and a woman's head, bears witness to the medieval craftsmanship of the period. These elements, typical of primitive Gothic, contrast with subsequent additions.
On the south side, four chapels open onto the nave, organized two by two. Their arrangement reflects a liturgical and architectural evolution between the two construction periods. A spiral staircase, integrated with the structure, serves the bell tower overlooking the third chapel. This bell tower, an emblematic element, illustrates the successive adaptations of the building over the centuries, mixing religious and defensive functions.
The location of the church, in the heart of Donnerey (Loiret), makes it a historical and cultural landmark for the municipality. Its listing in the inventory of Historic Monuments in 1925 underscores its heritage value, while its communal property guarantees its preservation. Architectural details, such as the ass-de-lampe or the 15th century frame, offer an overview of medieval constructive techniques in the Loire Valley, an area marked by a rich religious and seigneurial heritage.
