Origin and history
The church of Saint Eutrope in Baziège is a rural religious building built in the 16th century, emblematic of the shrines of Lauragais. It is characterized by the use of traditional materials and a bell tower erected between 1638 and 1639, reflecting the local architectural techniques of the period. Its plan includes a nave extended by a choir finished in apse with three sections, with side chapels and a sacristy.
As early as 1594, a brotherhood dedicated to Saint Eutrope was attested in the church, emphasizing its spiritual and community role. The building underwent major alterations in the 17th and 18th centuries, such as the movement of the north gate southward in 1766, the addition of a porch, a western stand, and reshaping of the openings. These transformations illustrate its adaptation to liturgical needs and stylistic developments.
Listed among the Historical Monuments since 1986, the church of Saint Eutrope belongs to the municipality of Baziège. Its architecture, marked by lateral chapels and a unique nave, makes it a representative testimony of the Occitan rural religious heritage. The accuracy of its location is considered satisfactory a priori, with an address associated with the code INSEE 31048 (Haute-Garonne).
