Saint-Félix Church (Box C 160): Order of 27 June 1984

Origin and history

The church Saint-Félix de Saint-Félix, located in the Charente department (Nouvelle-Aquitaine), dates from the 12th century. This historic monument once belonged to the ancient diocese of Saintes. Its Romanesque architecture is characterized by a unique vessel ending in a semicircular apse. The western facade, typically Charente, includes a three arched ground floor in the middle of the hangar, topped by a floor of arches worn by columns with carved capitals. Inside, the nave, restored in the 19th century, preserves traces of Romanesque archatures.

The building suffered from the ravages of the Hundred Years' War, a conflict that profoundly affected the region. The square bell tower, pierced by arches in the middle of the hangar, saw its second level rebuilt in 1888. The false square, covered with a dome on pendants, is adorned with arches resting on pilasters and round columns with historical Romanesque capitals. The apse, vaulted in cul-de-four, completes this emblematic architectural ensemble of medieval religious heritage.

Classified as a Historical Monument by decree of 27 June 1984, the church is now owned by the commune of Saint-Félix. Its state of conservation reflects successive restorations, including those of the goutreaux walls of the nave and bell tower in the 19th century. The location of the building, although documented, is considered to be of poor accuracy (level 5/10), based on available data.
