Origin and history
The Saint-Firmin church of Hocquincourt is located in the hamlet of Hocquincourt, on the territory of the commune of Hallencourt, in the west of the department of the Somme. This religious monument, typical of local buildings, is part of a rural landscape marked by medieval and reborn history of Picardia. Its architecture reflects the stylistic evolutions of its time, while serving as a place of worship and assembly for the community.
The church was built in the 15th and 16th centuries, a pivotal period between the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. This transition is manifested in its vaults of the choir, decorated with pendant keys characteristic of the Renaissance style. Among the remarkable elements, it houses a wooden statue of Saint Catherine, dated from the 15th to the 16th centuries, classified as a historical monument as an object since March 23, 1942. This movable heritage bears witness to the local devotion and religious craftsmanship of the time.
The monument is associated with Firmin of Amiens, the first bishop of Amiens in the fourth century, although the church itself is much later. This spiritual filiation illustrates the permanence of Christian worship in the region. The building is also part of the architectural landscape of the Hauts-de-France, where rural churches, often rebuilt or embellished in the 15th to 16th centuries, play a central role in community life and collective memory.
