Origin and history
The Saint-Fortunat church of Saint-Fort-sur-le-Né, located in the present-day New Aquitaine, once depended on the diocese of Saintes. The cathedral chapter of Angoulême had much of the parish land there. The original 12th century building, almost entirely destroyed by the English, was rebuilt in the 16th and 19th centuries. Today, only a few Romanesque elements remain, such as openings on the south wall and the bell tower.
The reconstruction of the 16th and 19th centuries introduced Gothic and Renaissance styles, visible in the apse and the nave. The 19th century façade has a simplified Romano-ogival portal. Inside, the nave is covered with arches of warheads adorned with sculpted liernes, thirdons and crosses. The choir, vaulted with warheads, preserves the trace of an ancient windowing to the east, still legible outside.
The church was listed as a Historical Monument by order of 5 December 1991. It is now owned by the commune of Saint-Fort-sur-le-Né. The contractor Warin contributed to its construction or restoration, although its exact role is not detailed in the available sources. Its architecture reflects stylistic developments and successive reconstructions related to local conflicts and liturgical needs.
