Origin and history

Saint-François-d'Assise de Nantes Church is a modern religious building built in the North Nantes district, north of the city. It is built on Rue de la Bourgeonnière and belongs to the parish of Sainte-Catherine-du-Petit-Port. Its architecture, led by M. Liberge (son of architect Yves Liberge, known for Notre-Dame-de-Lourdes Church), reflects a contemporary style for the time.

The decision to create a chapel in this area was taken by the bishopric on 29 December 1952. The project is moving towards the acquisition of larger land, and work begins at the end of 1955 with the digging of the foundations. The official "first stone" was laid on 6 October 1956 by Bishop Villepelet, then Bishop of Nantes. In the summer of 1957, celebrations were held even before the works were completed.

The official inauguration of the church took place on February 2, 1958. Since its creation, several parish priests have succeeded each other, marking its anchor in local parish life. The building is thus part of Nantes' religious and architectural history, reflecting the urban and spiritual evolutions of the second half of the 20th century.
