Origin and history

Saint-Géréon Church is a Catholic religious building located in the village of Saint-Géréon, in the commune of Ancenis-Saint-Géréon, in the Loire-Atlantique department. It houses several objects protected by historical monuments, including a 17th-century chalice and patena, a procession banner of 1804, and an 18th-century painting depicting Marie Madeleine. These elements demonstrate its cultural and spiritual role in the region.

The church is dedicated to Gereon of Cologne, saint martyr of the third century, although the reasons for this dedication remain unknown. In 1852, she welcomed relics of the saint, including a piece of her skull and jaw. These relics were stolen in the early 21st century, with the flight discovered in 2014. This flight marked a tragic event in the recent history of the building.

Saint-Géréon Church is part of a set of local religious buildings, including Saint-Pierre d'Ancenis Church and several chapels. It reflects the importance of religious heritage in the region of the Pays de la Loire, while being a place of memory for the community, especially with its monument to the deaths of the First World War.
