Church (C 439): registration by decree of 21 December 1984

Origin and history

Saint-Germain de Hanches Church, listed as a Historical Monument, dates from the 17th century. It has a vaulted nave in the middle of the arched hanger, accompanied by a bottom side separated by five pilasters supporting arcs. The choir, completed by a semicircular apse, and the quadrangular bell tower, attached to the west gable, are characteristic of this period. The tower, reinforced by buttresses, houses a staircase covered with an irregular polygonal turret.

The interior layout preserves traces of interventions made in the 19th century, reflecting an architectural and liturgical evolution. The bell tower, with its foothills and polygonal turret, illustrates the construction techniques of the time. The church, owned by the commune, was inscribed in the Historical Monuments by decree of 21 December 1984.

Located in Hanches, in the department of Eure-et-Loir (region Centre-Val de Loire), this church reflects the importance of religious buildings in the social and cultural organization of French villages in the 17th century. Its architecture, although partially modified in the 19th century, remains a typical example of rural churches of this period, combining simplicity and functionality.
