Origin and history

Saint-Gervais-et-Saint-Protais church, located in Loiron, Mayenne, is dedicated to Saints Gervais and Protais. Its original architecture probably included a choir, an apse, a transept, and apsidioles, but most of the parts were redone after the 15th century. Today, it is distinguished by a square choir and southern chapel, thick foothills, and windows in the middle of the hangar. The facade, once surmounted by a belfry and a pyramid in structure, housed a clock installed by André Saudrais before 1760.

Inside, fluted pilasters and simple moulding archvolts adorn the arches of the choir and chapels. The nave was extended and restored in 1867 by Mr.Boutreux, while the choir and transept were rebuilt in 1879. The church housed altars dedicated to Sainte-Catherine (1489) and Saint-Sébastien (1514), as well as a relic of the True Cross, offered by the Capuchins of Laval in 1774, and the relics of four martyrs. The 1906 inventory, marked by tensions, lasted two days after protests.

Historical sources such as the Dictionnaire de la Mayenne (1900-1910) of Angot and Gaugain underline its local importance. The building reflects the architectural and religious evolutions of the region, between medieval heritage and modern transformations. Its role in the community, especially through its relics and altars, bears witness to its spiritual and cultural anchoring in Mayenne.
