Origin and history

Saint-Gervais-Saint-Protais Church is a Romanesque religious monument located in the commune of Bevons, in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence department. It is named after the saints Gervais and Protais, two Christian martyrs often associated in ecclesiastical tradition. Its typical architecture of the Provencal novel is distinguished by a unique nave and a vaulted apse in cul-de-four.

The structure of the building rests on foothills strengthening the walls, while its main entrance is on the south side. This type of church, common in rural areas of the region, reflects the importance of Christianity in the social and spiritual organization of local communities in the Middle Ages. The Romanesque churches then served as places of assembly, prayer and management of collective affairs.

Although the available sources do not specify the exact date of its construction, its architectural style allows to situate it in the medieval period, between the 11th and 12th centuries. The churches of that time were often built or renovated by local lords or monastic communities, playing a central role in village life. No additional information on its specific history or any subsequent changes is mentioned in the sources consulted.
