Origin and history

The church Saint-Julien-l'Hospitalier de Magnant, located in the Aube department in the Grand Est region, is a religious building built mainly in the 12th and 16th centuries. It is distinguished by its Latin cross plan, with a 12th century porch and a transept as well as a 16th century apse. The church is dedicated to St Julien the Hospitaller and preserves notable heritage elements, such as 16th century windows, including a tree of Jesse and biblical scenes, as well as a statuary including a representation of St Julien on horseback and a Virgin with the Child.

The church was historically the seat of a parish on which Fralignes, reporting to the dean of Bar-sur-Seine, depended. She was under the bishop's snack, while the abbey of Montiéramey perceived the tithe as early as 1178. The building was listed as historic monuments in 1926, recognizing its heritage value. Inside, there are also funerary slabs, including one dating from 1520 and another from 1784, testifying to its role in local memory.

The 16th century stained glass windows, ranked among the most remarkable elements, illustrate various religious themes, such as the legend of the poor rich or representations of patron saints. The statuary, especially the equestrian figure of St Julien in polychrome limestone, reflects the religious art of the time. The church, owned by the commune of Magnant, remains an architectural and historical testimony of the medieval and modern periods in the region of Champagne.
